Save Filton Airfield Campaign
Submits Consultation Response to South Gloucestershire
Council
24th October 2011, Filton. The Save Filton
Airfield Campaign today submitted its formal response to the
South Gloucestershire Council consultation on the future of
the airfield. The 37 page document "A Vision for Filton
Airfield" sets forth our campaign's arguments. It examines,
using industrial research, how the airfield plays an
important part in the South West economy, how it has been
poorly utilitised by its current owners and how it can play
its part in the continuation of the long history of aviation
and aerospace innovation in Bristol. The full document can

"Filton
Airfield plans condemned by Bristol City Council"
05/09/11The Save Filton Airfield Campaign Group will be making a submission to Bristol City Council’s meeting concerning Filton Airfield on Tuesday 6th September. The Group will be asking Bristol City Council to work with South Gloucestershire Council to proactively campaign to win new aerospace business at the airfield.
“Our submission mentions the century of magnificent events that have happened at Filton, but more significantly the risk that industry may leave the area if the airfield is closed and future business opportunities together with the creation of additional high value jobs will be lost” said Cllr Darryl Collins, (Filton Town Councillor) who is part of the Save Filton Airfield Campaign Group. Cllr Collins went onto add “we are concerned that councillors on South Gloucestershire Council have made up their minds, have signed the airfields death warrant and want it closed. Although it is perhaps ironic that Bristol City Council is showing the most concern and we are extremely pleased that senior Bristol councillors are paying a keen interest in keeping the airfield alive.”
In its submission, the Group will highlight the risks if the airfield becomes a residential area. The Group firmly believes that there will be conflicts between the interests of industry (eg: Airbus, GKN Aerospace and Rolls-Royce) and the new residents. “Industry on the airfield is made up of world class companies, and in order to stay world class will want to continue developing their sites” said Bill Bowrey, Chairman of the South West Defence Industries Alliance which is actively supporting the campaign. “As experienced during recent industrial developments around the airfield, residents with homes adjacent to industry will quite naturally feel uncomfortable to new industrial buildings going up and will object. Industry will progressively feel squeezed and could relocate to other regions where the business environment is more conducive and welcoming to aerospace companies”.
In addition, the Department for Transport has highlighted that London Airports are quickly filling up with passenger aircraft. “What is London’s problem is a huge opportunity for Filton. We are calling on Bristol City Council and South Gloucestershire Council to view this positively and to jointly and proactively campaign for non-passenger business to Filton. In these austere times and in order to protect and develop the local economy we need to ensure that the airfield remains open and is developed.”
